Dubois was a pupil of Darius Milhaud who was a prominent member of "Les Six", the loose knit group of French composers whose music reacted against the lushness of Wagner and the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. Composing largely for woodwind and making use of unusual harmonies and textures, Dubois carried the light-hearted style of his teacher into the latter part of the twentieth century, writing music full of humour but with a bite and edginess to it.
However, this unsettled feeling is missing from 'Ballade des Pingouins' which, as suggested by the title, can best be described as 'charming'. It is a short piece of about sixty bars in 3/4, marked Allegretto, in which patterns of ascending and descending chromatic quavers alternate with a very different repeated lilting lullaby-like theme in a loose A B A (similar) B form. There is certainly humour in it, which adds to its charm.
