Alfred Reed was employed as a staff composer/arranger in his native New York while still in his teens, and carried that on into his WW II band service where he scored nearly 100 band compositions and arrangements. After the War he attended the Juilliard School of Music and went on to become staff composer and arranger for NBC and then ABC. Reed was executive editor of the music publishers Hansen Publications from 1955 to 1966 and professor of music at the University of Miami for 27 years , retiring in 1993. It is said that at the time of his death in 2005, he had commissioned compositions which would have taken him 31 years to complete.

'Ballade' was commissioned by the G. LeBlanc Corporation in 1955 for one of their chosen artists - the virtuoso saxophonist and clarinettist Vincent J. 'Jimmy' Abato. The copyright date is 1956 and it was first performed by Abato at a summer music camp in 1958. Typical of many ballads, the piece was conceived as rather slow and lyrical "and its single main theme, accompanied by two smaller motifs, is developed in a continuous fashion, affecting many subtle changes of mood and colour, even though almost every single measure (bar) is related in a close or distant way." (Alfred Reed)
