Béla Bartók is now considered to be one of the most important composers of the twentieth century, but it was not until he was 36 that he was thought of in his native Hungary as " …. a composer of some importance, who could no longer be ignored, even if he was disliked." He showed early promise on the piano which led to a place at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest from where he graduated in 1903 to develop a career as an international pianist. Bartók was soon drawn into teaching and became Professor of piano at the Academy at the age of 26. His early compositions were influenced by Brahms, Richard Strauss, Liszt and Wagner in a late Romantic style with nationalist elements, but were not generally well received so that he withdrew from concert life to concentrate on Hungarian folksong research from about 1905. This involved 'collecting trips' around Hungary and later further afield, many of them with his lifelong friend and fellow composer Zoltán Kodaly.

This collection of 24 pieces, listed under 'Contents', has been selected from Bartók's albums of piano pieces which date from1908 and are briefly described below. They have been skilfully arranged for clarinet and piano by the award-winning composer, arranger and creative artist Hywel Davies.
