Although composition was Vaughan Williams's main purpose in training at the Royal College of Music and Cambridge University, his early work has been described as inarticulate and it was not until his late twenties that he began to discover the language of English folksong and make it his own. His partsong 'Linden Lea' (1901) is a good example with its modal tune and lilting rhythm giving the impression of a true folksong when it is actually original to the composer. 'RVW' and his colleagues were at the root of the 'English Musical Renaissance' which rediscovered English folk music traditions, as well as going back to Purcell and beyond, to evolve an English style in the early part of the twentieth century which was independent of mainly nineteenth century Euriopean traditions.

With this as a background Vaughan Williams collected six genuine folksongs and arranged them for cello and piano with the title 'Six Studies in English Folk Song'. They were composed, published and first performed in London in 1927 by the outstanding cellist May Mukle, and later transcribed by Vaughan Williams and others for various wind and stringed instruments, including the clarinet, with the composer's stated aim that they should be "treated with love"
