Franz Doppler was born in Lemberg, now Lviv in Ukraine, and made his debut as a flautist at the age of thirteen, progressing to become acknowledged as one of the greatest virtuosi of his time. With his younger brother Karl, he formed a flute duo which toured Europe and overseas playing their own compositions and arrangements, to great acclaim. In 1841 Franz became principal flute of the Pest (now Budapest) Theatre Orchestra and the Hungarian National Orchestra where five of his operas were successfully staged. Seventeen years later he joined the Vienna Court Theatre Orchestra, initially as first flute and eventually becoming chief conductor. Franz Doppler composed six operas, fifteen ballets and a quantity of flute solo and duet music, much of it arranged from popular opera of the time.

Composition dates for these three pieces are not given, but they are typical of salon music of the mid to late nineteenth century - virtuosic, as befits a flautist of Franz Doppler's repute, light and 'showy' with a tendency towards sentimentality. As Werner Richter says in his note to this edition " 'Sweet courses' taken in moderation and with thought can be both stimulating and inspiring. So we may enjoy the pastime of an earlier generation or amuse ourselves with their form of musical entertainment."
