After studying music at universities in Bristol, London and Surrey, Richard Lambert embarked on a 34 year teaching career which led to the publication of his very successful GCSE music guide. He has been a worldwide music examiner but still found time to play the organ and to compose in a style which has evolved from mainstream twentieth century, jazz and popular idioms into atonalism and serial technique within well defined structures.

The total of 7 pieces which make up 'Cameos' were written in the 1980s and only 'Cantilena' was composed for alto sax.

Abigail's Jig celebrates the birth of the composer's daughter in its attempt to capture the atmosphere of an Irish jig. The folk music feel is enhanced by the use of modal harmony and 'American Folk' is gently parodied with references to Copland's 'cowboy' music.

By using the various techniques described in the introduction "Cantilena tries to capture a popular flavour, borrowing freely from pop and jazz styles." A 'bluesy' style emerges in the third main theme and a pseudo-rock style appears twice in the climax section, which acts as a song-like chorus.

'Five Short Pieces' were arranged for alto sax in 2017. " They are elaborate transcriptions of 'To One', five songs to poems by Christina Rees, which convey the countless moods associated with a relationship.
  • Abigail's Jig, op.10 no.2i
  • Cantilena, op.11c
  • Five Short Pieces
  • 1. Empty Night (where are you?)
  • 2. To Entice You
