Although it took him ten years and prolonged playing or conducting sabbaticals from the Paris Conservatoire, Eugene Bozza won three prizes there - for violin, conducting and composition, as well as the 'Grand Prix de Rome' in 1934. It was as Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes that he did much of his composing and, despite training as a string player, many of his 250 published works are for wind instruments. These are often characterized by flowing melodies within an elegant structure which carefully take account of the capabilities of the instrument.
'Aria' seems to have been inspired by two of JS Bach's organ pieces and was written at the 'Villa de Medici' in Rome where Bozza was living as part of the 1934 'Prix' already mentioned. It is dedicated to Marcel Mule, a leading saxophonist of the day and it is said that Bozza wrote the piece in a hurry, in response to an enquiry as to what he had achieved musically during the first few months of his stay.
