Carl Stamitz, the son of Johann, was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1745 and by the time he was 16 had joined Mannheim orchestra which was internationally famous for its musicianship, tone colour and the 'Mannheim Crescendo'. Carl continued to study music under his father and Christian Cannabich and became known as a virtuoso performer on the viola and viola d'amore in Germany, Austria, France, England and Russia. He received few court appointments and ended his career as "Academic Concert-master" at Jena, Austria where he died in 1801.

The concerto in G Major, op.29 of 1780 is probably the best known of his seven flute concertos. It has the standard three movement structure of the Baroque concerto grosso, but instead of the balanced interplay between soloist and orchestra, Stamitz developed the form by writing a more prominent and virtuosic solo part with orchestral accompaniment. An example of this is the majestic flute entry at bar 49 of the first movement, in unison with the orchestra but strongly leading it. The slow second movement has a singing line for the flute with a light mainly pizzicato accompaniment, and the finale, which uses Mannheim School techniques of fanfare rhythms and syncopation, brings the concerto to an end in 'galant' style.
