The story that the fourteen year old Albeniz travelled alone through the Americas and parts of Europe, supporting himself by his piano performance is probably over-dramatized - it seems likely that his father accompanied him. But he clearly was a child prodigy, entering the Leipzig Conservatory in his fifteenth year, later obtaining a grant from the Spanish king to continue his studies in Brussels and, at eighteen, travelling to Budapest to study under Franz Liszt before settling finally in Paris in 1893 as his career as a performer passed its zenith. Apart from a handful of operas, zarzuelas and a few other works, Albeniz wrote for his own instrument - the piano, in a style which borrowed idioms, dance rhythms and tonality from various parts of Spain. Commenting on his earlier work, Albeniz wrote 'The music is a bit infantile, plain, spirited but in the end, the people, our Spanish people, are something of all that.' '... there is less musical science, less of the grand idea.'
