The young Hinke studied oboe at the Dresden Conservatory and by the time he was 23 was first oboe in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Between 1873 and 1878 he also taught at the Leipzig Conservatory and it was perhaps during this period that he worked on his 'Elementary Method for Oboe' which was first published in 1888. It has been a foundation of oboe teaching ever since and, well over a century later, continues to appear in the Associated Board and Trinity College London syllabi.
