Carl Reinecke has been described as one of the most influential and versatile musicians of his time. He made his first public appearance as a pianist at the age of 12 and began touring at 19 before settling in Leipzig where he studied under Mendelssohn, Schumann and Liszt. At 27 he became a professor at the Cologne Conservatory and nine years later (1860), Professor of Composition and Piano at the Leipzig Conservatory and Conductor of the famous Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. During his thirty-five year teaching career, Reinecke's many students included several who were to become leading composers of the later nineteenth century - Greig, Stanford, Janacek, Albeniz and Max Bruch amongst them.

On retirement from teaching, Reinecke devoted his time to composition and produced nearly three hundred published works throughout his life including the 'Undine' flute sonata which is probably his best known work. The four Fantasy Pieces (Fantasiestucke) date from about 1845 when he was in Leipzig with Mendelssohn and Schumann, and their influence can be heard in the very lyrical, strongly Romantic style of the work.
