Having studied music at Cambridge University, Nigel Hess began a composing career during which he has written twenty scores for stage productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, music for the Shakespeare Globe in London and for Broadway, and commissioned works for wind band and military band, choral works, orchestral pieces and a piano concerto. His numerous scores for British and American Television and Film include 'Vanity Fair', 'Campion', 'Maigret', 'Wycliffe' and 'Ballykissangel', and the music for the 2004 British film 'Ladies in Lavender'.

The film is based on a short story by William Locke, first published in 1908. It is set in Cornwall, in 1936, and stars Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith who play two sisters who discover a half drowned but attractive young (male) violinist washed up on a beach. Nigel Hess originally wrote the music for solo violin and orchestra and 'Classic FM' listeners may be familiar with Joshua Bell's recording of the piece with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The composer has transcribed it for clarinet and piano.
