This work was originally published by Oxford University Press, but although oboists regard it as the mainstay of the solo repertoire it was allowed to go out of print. Responding to repeated demands, Emerson Edition re-published it in 1989, together with the Roundelay which had suffered a similar fate. Born in Edinburgh, Alan Richardson was a keen pianist and improviser from the age of seven, and joined the BBC in Edinburgh at the age of twenty. In 1928 he began to study in London with Harold Craxton and also with Theodore Holland. He became well-known as a performer, accompanist and chamber-music player. Many of his compositions are for the piano and are generally short and memorable for their well-shaped melodies and harmonies. In 1954 he married the distinguished oboist Janet Craxton, daughter of his former tutor, and their home in Hampstead doubled as a rehearsal and recording studio. He composed many works for wind instruments, several of which are unfortunately currently out of print.
