It is said that William Lloyd Webber's prowess at the organ was largely inspired by his father's enthusiasm for listening to organs in London whenever he could, often accompanied by the young William. He was giving recitals throughout the UK by the age of fourteen and later won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music (RCM), where he studied with Vaughan Williams, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists at nineteen. Lloyd Webber's earliest known composition is his Fantasy Trio in B minor for violin, cello & piano but most of his music was written between 1945 and the 1960s and three-quarters of it is choral or for solo voice, for organ or piano. His style owes much to the late romanticism of composers like Rachmaninov, Sibelius and Cesar Franck and, finding himself increasingly at odds with contemporary trends in composition, Lloyd Webber turned to the academic side of British music by teaching at the RCM and as Director of the London College of Music from 1964 until his death in 1982. It could be said that his legacy to music is his two sons, Andrew the composer and Julian the virtuoso cellist.

'Frensham Pond, Aquarelle for Clarinet and Piano' was published in 1960 as the second of two 'Country Impressions' and one of the few wind pieces Lloyd Webber wrote. It is a wistfully lyrical piece of thirty seven bars which uses most of the clarinet's range to describe its subject. Frensham Great Pond was constructed in the thirteenth century as a fish pond for Farnham Castle in Surrey, close to the county boundary with Hampshire. It is owned by the National Trust and combines nature conservation with leisure amenities - probably a busier place than it was when William Lloyd Webber composed this piece.

I wish the clarinet part was printed on slightly thicker paper because it's only one page. Beautiful music though!
