'Shall We Dance' was the seventh of ten film musicals which starred Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and was released in 1937. It was the second Hollywood musical to be scored by George Gershwin with his brother Ira writing the lyrics. George was preoccupied with the idea of blending jazz with classical forms, and each scene was written in a different dance style, despite Ira Gershwin's and Fred Astaire's lack of enthusiasm for the concept. This may have contributed to the film's limited success with both critics and public, and it earned less than half the profit of the previous Astaire and Rogers film. The score has never been published in full but introduced several numbers which have become classics - 'Shall We Dance' (as overture & finale), 'They All Laughed ...', 'Let's Call the Whole Thing Off' and 'They Can't Take That Away from Me' besides 'Walking the Dog'.
The music was written as an instrumental accompaniment to the film sequence of walking a dog along the deck of a luxury
