David Stone studied violin and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and graduated as Bachelor of Music after military service during World War II. In 1947 he joined the music staff at Charterhouse School where he identified a need for specially composed pieces and arrangements for junior orchestras and ensembles whose players were becoming disheartened by the difficulties of the classical repertoire. So he began to write for wind band, brass band, choral and chamber music and produced four Miniature String Quartets which are probably his best known work for young musicians and are played around the world to this day. Stone was senior producer of chamber and recital broadcasts at the BBC from 1956 to 1969 when he took up the directorship of the School of Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama until his retirement in 1981.
Idyll was written in 2009 and seems to have been dedicated to the composer's grand-daughter. It is a playful but beautifully expressive pie
