John Iveson played principal trombone with most of the London orchestras and with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, for which he made a number of arrangements. Many of these have become established within the Brass Ensemble and Brass Band repertoires. He was Trombone Professor at the Royal College of Music for twenty-six years, now teaching at the Royal Northern College of Music and he is an examiner for the Associated Board.
This collection of twentieth century hits includes jazz numbers from the 1920's and 1930's, a tango, classic pop and a pop ballad. At the beginning of each piece, John Iveson offers advice on articulation, phrasing and interpretation generally, and encourages the student to try improvising where appropriate.
