ROMANCE

Edward German first came to public notice in the late 1880's as musical director of the Globe Theatre in London with his incidental music to Shakespeare's "Richard III". A series of well received compositions for the stage followed and German was commissioned to complete Sir Arthur Sullivan's "The Emerald Isle" following his death in 1901. German's own contribution to light opera "Merrie England" was successfully staged at the Savoy Theatre in 1902 and remained popular for some fifty years, but German's promise as successor to Sullivan was never really fulfilled.
His music has been described as light and graceful - the "Romance" is a good example. It dates from early in German's composing career and was first performed at the Oxford University Musical Union on 29th January, 1890.
