Wilhelm Popp studied the flute with Caspar Kummer and the great Louis Drouet in the 1850's and became pianist and flautist to the orchestra of the Saxon Court Theatre. In 1867 he left Coburg to take up the position of principal flute in the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Popp was a prolific composer of nearly six hundred original works and arrangements of popular melodies and operatic favourites of the time, most of them for flute and piano. His own compositions are tuneful and cover a wide range of difficulty so that they can be enjoyed by beginners on the flute to virtuosi.

There seems to be no record of the date of composition or first publication of the Nightingale Serenade. This edition was prepared by the accomplished American flautist and teacher James Pellerite, and published in 1962. An eight bar introduction states a repeated semi quaver pattern which is used later to introduce changes of tempo and key signature - the Lento cantabile at bar 28 for instance. There is an abrupt change of tempo to 'Moderato assai' which is effectively a nine bar variation before an 'a tempo' brings back a variation of the 'Lento cantabile' theme. The opening music returns to bring this tuneful and musically varied piece to a lively conclusion.
