Although he was born in neighbouring Normandy, the family of Ren''-Emmanuel Baton, who was known simply. as Rhen''-Baton, originated from Brittany. Breton references occur in the titles of some of his forty or so listed compositions and Breton folk idioms can be heard in much of his work. He studied piano at the Paris Conservatoire and launched his career as a conductor at the age of 28. Five years later he was conducting the orchestra of the Ballets Russes in London and on tour in South America at the request of its founder and impressario Serge Diaghilev. From 1919 to 1933 Rhen''-Baton conducted the Pasdeloup Orchestra which had been established to widen access to classical music and with them he made the first recording of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique in 1924.
