One of the first students of the saxophone at the Birmingham Conservatoire, Nigel Wood helped to set up a specialist saxophone department there, after graduation. He was a founding member of the four piece 'Saxtet' and performing with it inspired him to compose for the instrument, both solo and in ensemble and then to publish his own and other's compositions under the name 'Saxtet Publications'. His work has been performed in the UK and abroad by such acclaimed saxophonists as John Harle and Gerard McChrystal and several of his pieces have been selected by ABRSM and TCL for their respective exam syllabi.
'Schwarzer Tänzer', meaning 'Black Dancer' was written for Christopher Boatwright who was a principal with the Stuttgart Ballet and one of the first black dancers to achieve recognition at that level in Germany, which fact seemed to preoccupy the media at the expense of his talent. When Boatwright asked the composer for a piece which could be choreographed, he was therefore careful to avoid ethnic music clichés "...and instead went for a Germanic fusion of Weill and oompah band." Schwartzer Tänzer has had many concert performances but Christopher Boatwright died in 1997, before he could dance it.
