"Edward Elgar's 'Oboe Soliloquy' - part of a projected 'Suite' for oboe and orchestra - was written in 1930 for Leon Goosens, principal oboist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Although a three-movement work was planned, Elgar only completed the middle (slow) movement, in short score ......

In 1967, Goosens - to whom Elgar had given the manuscript of the slow movement - entrusted the composer Gordon Jacob with the task of orchestrating the existing music. The work was given the title 'Soliloquy', and the first performance was given on B.B.C. Television on 11th June 1967. Later, Goosens recorded the work with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta conducted by Norman del Mar." (From the Editorial Note)
