SOLOS FOR THE ALTO SAXOPHONE PLAYER

Although he went to the University of Michigan to study dentistry, Larry Teal joined a jazz band which toured Europe for several years before returning to the States. There he joined a 'society orchestra' in Detroit before joining the Detroit Symphony Orchestra where he stayed from 1943 to 1964.

Compared to most instruments the saxophone was a late arrival on the musical scene and didn't emerge as a solo instrument until the 1920s. Many outstanding composers have written for the sax. since then but for obvious reasons, there is no original repertoire from the Baroque, Classical or Romantic eras. From the musical literature of those periods, Larry Teal has carefully selected and transcribed fifteen pieces for their musical value and adaptability to the nature and limitations of the saxophone and presents them here as studies and, with piano accompaniments , for performance.
