Jerry Lanning has conducted many orchestras and concert bands including the BBC Radio Orchestra and has arranged for the BBC, film and the theatre. He founded the educational publishing company 'Middle Eight Music' and has been consultant to Cramer Music which publishes the Classic Experience series.

For alto saxophone and piano, the book contains twenty-five arrangements of themes from some of the world's most popular classics, as featured in the hugely successful recording compilations. The pieces have been imaginatively arranged to ensure that they suit the Eb saxophone and are within the capabilities of the average player. Breath marks are used, not just for their obvious purpose but also to encourage proper phrasing. The pieces are presented more or less alphabetically but to minimize the page turns in the accompaniment and balance the layout of the solo part.
