Saint-Sa''ns' oboe sonata (Op.166) is one of three sonatas for wind and piano written during 1921 and was published only weeks before his death on 16th December that year. It is not the 'swan song' of a tired old man and hardly a sonata either. The individual movements largely ignore sonata form in themselves and there is no sense of the whole being conceived as an organically developed cycle. Instead, Saint-Sa''ns adopts the 'gallant' style of the 18th century in tone and form to produce a collection of characteristic single pieces. Their contemporary harmony, wit and irony strongly exhibit early 20th century Neo-classicism and have an affinity with the works of Francis Poulenc, sixty-four years his junior.
Having studied music at Durham University, Robert Rainford embarked on a career as a freelance musician and music teacher in the North West of England. He publishes music for woodwind and brass, including his own compositions and arrangements under the name 'Forton Music' which
