Joseph Horovitz and his family arrived in the UK from Vienna in 1938 as refugees from Nazism. He studied Music at Oxford University and later studied composition with Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. His career began with the appointment as Music Director at the Bristol Old Vic theatre in 1950 from where he went on to conduct ballet and opera in the UK, Europe and the USA. Horovitz became Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music in 1961 and was still teaching there in 2015. His own works, numbering over fifty, represent a wide variety of genres including ballet, opera, film and television, orchestra, wind band, brass band, chamber music and a number of wind concertos and accompanied solos for wind.

The Sonatina for clarinet and piano was composed in 1981, partly at the request of the virtuoso clarinettist Gervase de Peyer and first performed by him, accompanied by Gwenneth Pryor, at the Wigmore Hall, London on 12th May that year. Horovitz and de Peyer had met as students at the RCM in 1948 and they shared a further year of study in Paris under Cahuzac and Nadia Boulanger. The friendship which developed led to several compositions by Horovitz including the Concerto and the Concertante for clarinet and strings, and his 'Two Majorcan Pieces.'
The structure of the lighthearted, jazz-influenced but tonal Sonatina follows the three movement convention and is equally demanding of both players. The mainly lyrical first movement is in classical sonata form and written for the clarinet's middle register while the A-B-A structure of the 3/4 time singing second movement visits the instrument's lower register. The rondo-like finale alternates two themes in equal proportions and exploits the tonal range of the clarinet while concentrating on its upper end.

  • I Allegro calmato
  • II Lento quasi andante
  • III Con brio
