The "Victorian Kitchen Garden" was a 13 part British television series broadcast in 1987 by BBC2, which dealt with the restoration of a largely derelict kitchen garden at Chilton Foliat in Wiltshire. The gardeners and production team went to great lengths to procure planting stock & seed appropriate to the nineteenth century and even used tools of the period, which were found on site.
Paul Reade produced various compositions for children's television and he also jointly composed the theme music for the "Antiques Roadshow". His theme for the Victorian Kitchen Garden is dedicated to Emma Johnson who performed it and it won the Ivor Novello award for best TV theme music in 1991. John Davies's performance notes for each of the five movements are printed on the Contents page.

We have played one of these pieces for grade 6 and decided to play the rest of the suite to gain context. An inspiring and rewarding group of pieces.

Dedicated to Emma Johnson, the Suite from The Victorian Kitchen Garden by Paul Reade is written for B flat clarinet & piano or harp.
The five pieces are rewarding to play for the clarinettist with a skill level from Grades 5/6+.
Each piece has a programmatic title:
I. Prelude
II. Spring
III. Mists
IV. Exotica
V. Summer
The piano (or harp) accompaniment is not too technically challenging.
These pieces are very popular with audiences and my pupils. The pieces provide an incentive to develop a pleasing tone across the full range of the clarinet.
Recorded by her and harpist Skaila Kanga and in another recording with BBC Concert Orchestra. I suggest you listen to recordings which are available on a number of music streaming providers as well as CDs. Then put in your order with June Emerson, you’ll be playing the pieces in no time. Very rewarding.
