At the request of ABRSM Publishing, Ian Mitchell, who is a clarinettist and teacher, has edited this collection of sixteen specially written pieces by contemporary composers covering Grades 1 to 8. In the Introduction he describes it as "....., a colourful collection of items that are satisfying to play whilst offering plenty of interesting and stimulating challenges to performers." The CD is a recording of all 16 pieces performed by Ian Mitchell and Thalia Myers.

There is a short biography of each of the composers represented including Robert Saxton, who early in his career received advice from Benjamin Britten and went on to study with Elisabeth Lutyens and Luciano Berio. Amongst his compositions are commissions for the BBC and Opera North and he has been Head of Composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Royal Academy of Music.

Also represented is Errollyn Wallen who first trained at the Dance Theater in Harlem before studying composition at London and Cambridge universities. She has received commissions from the BBC, The Royal Opera House and the Philharmonia Orchestra and is as much admired for her singing and writing of jazz / popular songs as she is for her contemporary 'classical' compositions, which is reflected in the motto of her Ensemble X - "We don't break down barriers in music.... we don't see any".
