The seven year old John Rutter filled his parents' London flat with so much piano improvisation and singing that, in his own words, they "…. thought that if you can't stop it at least get him to do it better,". So they sent him to a piano teacher who suggested that he should do anything musical except play the piano. As a pupil and chorister at Highgate School in 1963 he sang in the first recording of Benjamin Britten's 'War Requiem', conducted by the composer, and went on to study music at Clare College, Cambridge University. At Cambridge John Rutter met the revered Director of King's College Choir, David Willcocks, who encouraged his choral composing and conducting and introduced him to the Oxford University Press which published his 'Shepherds' Pipe Carol', written when Rutter was eighteen. He returned to Clare College to direct the choir between 1975 and 1979 and established its international reputation. He continues to compose, mostly choral works, to conduct the Cambridge Singers, which he founded, and to produce recordings, all of which have earned him awards and recognition at home and abroad.

Being a piece for wind and strings, John Rutter's 'Suite Antique' is perhaps unique within his large catalogue of mostly choral music. It was written in 1979 for the Cookham Festival where Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.5 was also on the programme and was written for the same instruments - flute, harpsichord and strings. Rutter's suite has twice as many movements as Bach's concerto, but it reflects Baroque and Classical forms and styles to achieve its 'antique' feel. The reduction of the string parts to keyboard seems to be the work of the composer.
