Having won prizes in composition and harmony at the Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique de Paris, Paule Maurice embarked on a career in music education which led her to the professorship of sight-reading at the Paris Conservatoire in 1943. Of her thirty or so compositions, the"Tableaux de Provence" are the best known and were written during the late 1950's when she was especially active as a composer. They are a 'tapestry' or portrait of the part of Provence where both Paule Maurice and Marcel Mule, the work's dedicatee, took holidays with their respective families and consist of five strongly contrasted movements, each with an underlying dance rhythm and a title in Provencal dialect. The 'Tableaux' were first performed on 9th December,1958 by Jean-Marie Londeix and the Orchestre Symphonique Brestois conducted by the composer's husband, Pierre Lantier.

This edition is for alto saxophone and piano but the full set of orchestral parts is available for hire from the publisher.
