Piazzolla spent his childhood in New York during Prohibition where he was exposed to the Big Band Jazz of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. His later experiments with his own "tipica" band and then a string orchestra in Buenos Aires were not a success and he left Argentina for Europe where he met Nadia Boulanger. She encouraged him to abandon attempts at intellectual music and to follow his instincts by composing in the tango idiom. Back in Buenos Aires he formed a quintet to play his "tango nuevo" which led to international recognition and success for the latter thirty years of his life.
