Jim Parker graduated as an oboist from the Guildhall School of Music and played with leading London orchestras and chamber ensembles before joining the group of poets and musicians called the Barrow Poets who formed in the late 1950's to play, sing and recite in pubs. Jim Parker joined as composer and performer and as a result "the music got more complicated and interesting" (Gerard Benson, a fellow Barrow Poet). Parker's setting of John Betjeman reading his own poetry to music was recorded and that, with other recordings including 'Captain Beaky' which topped the charts, led to work in London's West End theatres and television.

His TV scores, which number over a hundred, include 'Soldier Soldier', 'Midsomer Murders', 'The House of Eliott' and 'Tom Jones'; and he has won the BAFTA award for best television music four times. Parker has scored a number of films including 'A Rather English Marriage', 'Girl Shy' and 'Lost for Words' and his published concert works include 'A Londoner in New York' (10 piece brass), 'Mississipi Five' (wind quintet), 'The Golden Section' (brass quintet') and a clarinet concerto.
