THREE TRIFLES

There are few composers for whom there is no biographical information at all, but Edward Parker seems to be one of them. Even the year of his birth is uncertain. 'Three Trifles for Bassoon and Piano' is dated October 1984 at Arkesden, a little village in north Essex, UK and is headed with the dedication "for Grandson Paul".

None of these 'Three Trifles' has a metronome marking so tempi are left to the discretion of the player and accompanist, aided by the composer's performance/speed suggestions. The sixty-nine bars of the first piece 'Jaunty Tune', are marked 'Briskly' and are built around a two bar motif which is twice extended to four bars. This contrasts with the 'smooth expressiveness' of the second tune 'Evening Thoughts' which is lyrical and thoughtful, as its title suggests. 'Carefree' is the finale, marked "With easy swinging rhythm", it is based on groups of ascending quaver triplets, has an overall range of about two and a half octaves and nicely rounds off this collection of three pieces.
