VARIATIONS ON AN ALBANIAN FOLK TUNE

Feim Ibrahimi (1935 - 1997) was born in Gjirokast'r, a small town in the south of Albania. After his three-year term of military service he began work as the head of the music section at the House of Pioneers, and also taught at the music school in Durr's. In 1962, when the Conservatoire was founded in Tirana, he began studying composition with Tish Daija, and became the first Albanian composer to be entirely musically educated in his own country. During these student years he wrote, among other things, a string quartet, a Toccata for piano and a ballet suite. These were soon followed by the Concerto for cello and orchestra (1968), music for the film 'Ngadhnjim mbi vdekjen' (Triumph over Death, 1968) and a Cantata for choir and orchestra (1969). Since that time he has written, in addition to many songs and romances, two concertos for piano and one for oboe, two rhapsodies for orchestra and further film music.
