This is a substantial and powerful piece with several challenges. It will however, be worth the effort and it deserves to be performed regularly

Ruth Gipps Clarinet Sonata op45, not under my fingers yet, but a melodious challenge and for the clarinet in A, what's not to like!

It doesn't sound like it was written in the 1950s, but it is a seriously original work, without the apparently gratuitous difficulties of her much earlier clarinet concerto. I don't think it's going to get well enough known to be a standard recital piece; also, it doesn't have the lyrical qualities (the slow movement excepted) of, for instance, the Poulenc sonata
