This book has changed the way I approach my practice time. I spend more time warming up and have greatly increased my ‘staying power’ as a result.
The flip flexibility exercises and explanations of every task continue to show an old dig new tricks!
Haven’t touched my old Arban since starting to work through these.

Calum Gray about  THE WRONG NOTE RAG (score & parts):
Jan 7, 2024
(Verified customer)
Although relatively short in duration and light in nature, The Wrong Note Rag is not easy. However, by the time the band has become comfortable with the dots and performing the music fluently, I feel sure audiences will really enjoy it.

Charmian Knight about  CANTILENA:

We like the sound of this piece, because it's fresh and easy on the ear without being sentimental. It's a bit different. However we haven't yet played it as a trio.

Dr David Thomas about  HOSANNAH:
Jan 11, 2024
(Verified customer)
The difficulty level of this beautiful piece is much higher than suggested. A consistency of tone must be maintained over a two and a half octave range, and this requires significant breath control. Much of the writing is legato, moving across different harmonic series. The top G and F# come at awkward moments.....This impressive concert piece really needs to have the organ accompaniament as Liszt intended. You could play it as part of a Service, perhaps for Communion, as it really needs the acoustical setting of a large religious building.

Philip Harding about  CANTO SERIOSO:
Jan 26, 2024
(Verified customer)
This beautiful "serious song" by Carl Nielsen requires excellent breath for the initial slow, long melodic phrase which takes the player to a held low G. Thereafter, the piece remains in the middle register, going no higher than the F on the top of the stave. After a turbulent middle section, the piece returns to a slow melodic end, resting on a held low C. Overall, a moving but satisfying piece to play.

Love this little book. Has everything I need to reference regarding fingerings and trills with a really interesting intro that has a lot of great discussion on tone, intonation, reeds, etc. It fit nicely in my case. PLUS the book arrived much earlier than I anticipated, considering it was traveling across the pond. Would definitely go back to June Emerson again when looking for music.

I played this piece years ago on 'cello and was keen to play it on bass clarinet. The transcription stands up well although the very high passages ask a lot of the bass. The original need some portamento but this can be implied on the bass. It is good fun to play.

Ian about  CONCERTO in C major:

I enjoy finding composers somewhat out of the everyday round. Now in my late 70s I am relearning the bassoon after some 15 years lapse.I have not yet mastered all movements so look forward to the next few weeks.A realistic challenge for me at my current stage. It is well printed and tuneful.

This is not too difficult to play the notes or the rhythm. I have not played it enough yet to understand the piece to do it justice.I found it somewhat surprising for Faure. I reserve judgement for now. Printing is clear.

Mike Williamson about  L'IMPRESARIO IN ANGUSTIE Overture:
Feb 24, 2024
(Verified customer)
The original overture written in the latter half of the Eighteenth century follows the traditions of the time. This arrangement from 2006 for wind sextet has kept the same period style which makes the performance of it more authentic. A nice 5 minute overture.

Mike Williamson about  FIVE CONCERT PIECES (score & parts):
Feb 24, 2024
(Verified customer)
This set of very short pieces for wind sextet have a relatively unknown history. The Bach family have a complicated structure and it is impossible to track the origins of these sextets with any degree of certainty. They are reasonably attractive to play, but probably not in the concert repertoire.

Yvonne Oades about  WALKING TUNE:
Feb 25, 2024

This is a lovely tune which make me practice a good range on my bassoon.
It's written in 2 clefs, one of which I can't read yet, but a bit of help from a friend put all it in bass clef and I am haltingly away.
Thanks very much
