Keith Ramon Cole was born in Birmingham, England in 1938, and showed a keen interest in music from an early age. He began to learn the piano at the age of 7 and quickly developed perfect pitch. After leaving school, he studied at Birmingham's Bourneville College of Art until he won a scholarship to the Midland Institute (now the Birmingham Conservatoire) to study piano, but was quickly invited to join the composition group of Christopher Edmunds.
In 1957 he moved to Manchester where he won a bursary to study piano and composition at the Royal Manchester College of Music. There he quickly came into contact with people like John Ogdon, John McCabe, Rodney Friend, Bryan Lester and many more. He won the Ascherberg Composition Prize at the end of his first year and two years later the Edward Hecht Prize.
After graduation from Manchester, he became a teacher, firstly in Birmingham, then later in Kent, where he wrote many works, instrumental, vocal, theatrical and educational.

These 14 variations on a well known theme by Paganini are both fun and challenging to play. They are witty and musical and are well written for the instrument utilising a large 3.5 octave range - ideal for any player wishing to practise their fluency across the registers. The piece is very approachable to play and to listen to and suitable for a professional, advanced player or student looking for something new to perform or practise on the bass clarinet.
