Gerald Finzi is best known for his choral works and songs, particularly his settings for voice and piano of poems by Thomas Hardy. He wrote little instrumental music and only two works for wind, so it is remarkable that his clarinet concerto (Op. 31) of 1949 is perhaps his best known work and is firmly established in the clarinet repertoire. It was preceded by the Five Bagatelles (Op. 23) which were published three years earlier and so enthusiastically received that the initial print run sold out in a year, despite Finzi's comment "they are only trifles.....not worth much, but got better notices than my decent stuff". More than seventy years later, Five Bagatelles is still a very popular titles.
