In a lifetime that was only three years longer than Mozart's, Felix Mendelssohn achieved a degree of success at the keyboard and as a conductor which approached his predecessor's. His musical legacy hardly compares with Mozart's but does include a number of "Songs without Words" - Mendelssohn's own title for his keyboard pieces which have a particularly lyrical and 'singing' tune. Thus they lend themselves to arrangement for a single voiced instrument, like the clarinet, and piano, but as the arrangers Thea King and Alan Frank make clear, the piano is more than just an accompaniment and the melodic inventiveness of its music needs to be heard in balance with the solo clarinet.
