At the age of 26, Edward German became musical director of the Globe Theatre in London where his incidental music to Shakespeare's Richard III was well received and became the first of a succession of compositions for plays. These found long-lasting popularity outside the theatre in the form of orchestral suites and other arrangements. From about 1900 German turned to Light Opera and had his greatest success with "Merrie England" at the Savoy Theatre in 1902. Although a violinist, he seems to have favoured woodwind for compositions outside the orchestra which led to the publication in 1889 of his 'Saltarello'. This is a dance in triple time, with medieval origins, which follows a dance in common time and this supplies the tune on which the saltarello is effectively a variation.
Colin Bradbury writes in his introduction to this edition "The dynamics added to the original flute part are derived from the more detailed piano score, and inconsistencies have been, wherever possible, resolved."
