A suite of five contrasting pieces inspired a friend's wild garden. The composer particularly liked the idea of writing something a little edgy to depict the weeds, and explores the colours and expressive power of the oboe.

The composer writes:
"During the Covid Lockdown of 2020 my attention shifted, by necessity, from writing music for large ensemble to instrumental solos. In conversation with an oboe-playing friend, Alison Swindles, she complained that her garden was an unhappy mix of ‘weeds and patches’. I was struck by the phrase and decided that it would be a good title for a suite of pieces for oboe and piano. I particularly liked the idea of writing something a little edgy to depict the weeds.
The first movement Lazy Daisies – Creeping Thistles starts off benignly. The weather that Spring was really lovely, and the air had a pure quality that is normally missing because of traffic. Daily exercise was confined to hour-long walks and fields of lazy daisies were everywhere. To provide contrast the middle section is acerbic and asymmetric.
According to Alison, clover patches were a real problem in the garden. Although it’s a mutation, apparently five-leaf clover can appear occasionally, hopefully bringing the finder extra good luck and financial gain. Clover Patch is a lyrical song in 5/4 time.
Stinging Nettles is fairly self-explanatory in style; an aggravated dance something like a tarantella. There is more of a duet feel between oboe and piano in this movement.
The gentle lilt of the barcarole is combined with a plaintive melody and some bittersweet harmonies in Blackberry Bramble Barcarole.
Finally, Moss End combines the moss of the garden with a geographic location (there’s a garden centre!) near Warfield Church in Berkshire. On my walks I would approach it from Frost Folly where you could sit and watch the dogs play in the pond. There is an optional cadenza-like section in the middle of this movement which I am given to understand is a little tricky to play!
I loved the excuse to explore the colours and expressive power of the oboe. While the suite as a whole is not difficult, there are some more challenging sections!"
