Rebecca Roberts about  CONCERTO:
Mar 24, 2022
(Verified customer)
Jolivet Concerto is a very important piece in the bassoon repertoire. It's technically challenging but really worth the effort as it's of great musical substance. Soaring lyrical passages alternate with funky, dancey episodes. Health warning: contains top F!!! This is an exhilarating play and recommended for advanced players.

Chris Jameson about  VOICING:
Mar 24, 2022
(Verified customer)
'VOICING' is my go to book for sax altissimo. The book is well written, and the exercises are progressively challenging. I've read most books on altissimo, but 'VOICING' is the best. The book enables the reader to master overtones on the saxophone, success with altissimo will certainly follow. A highly recommended book.

Torbjorn Hultmark about  MISTERIOSO II:
Mar 24, 2022
(Verified customer)
A beautifully written and playable piece for trumpet and marimba (can be substituted with piano). Musically this is a first class piece ideal for recitals for someone reasonably advanced from grade 8 level upwards. Quite a lot of detailed rhythm and meter practice required.

John Dawson about  ARLEQUIN:
Mar 25, 2022
(Verified customer)
A quirky piece, written by one of the 20th Century's great players in a post Debussy style. I'm still trying to get my head around it, especially the use of French accidental notation and the free rhythms. This could be an interesting and original encore piece.

Anonymous about  10 JAZZ INVENTIONS:
Mar 27, 2022

Excellent duets for improving jazz rhythms and articulation. Don't be misled by the words "Grade 4" on the cover: these are characteristic Niehaus swing pieces, with fast-moving changes and subtlety of articulation and accenting. Plenty to provide some challenge for players at the higher grades.

Simon Jackson about  AU LOIN Op.20:
Mar 27, 2022

Lies well on the cor has a wonderfully plaintiff motif. Fine for echo effect but it is bordering on the repetitive. Slow and quite easy to project a varied tone.

The Urtext is the closest I know to Brahms work. Other publications have interesting interpretations, and the page layout is different. I use two different publications for my performances.

Similar to my comments on the FMol. The piano parts are useful. Urtext is reliable. I prefer my own editing, of course.

Having performed the excellent Three Billy goats gruff and the troll by Paul Harvey for quartet and Peter and the Wolf for wind quintet, I was very excited to find this narrated woodwind trio. I'm afraid we were very disappointed with the music which we didn't feel would be particularly accessible for a junior audience. Hopeful that Lisa Portus might produce some narrated pieces at some point as all her arrangements are fantastic. Despite this purchase we remain huge fans of June Emerson and their fantastic collection of woodwind ensemble music!

Mike Halliday about  ANDANTINO Op.30 No.1:
Mar 30, 2022
(Verified customer)
This needs a bit of rehearsal with the pianist as the rhythms are not predictable and there are a number of signature changes. It also needs plenty of stamina, with the slow tempo and long phrases. However, it is well worth the effort, with plenty of lovely moments both melodically and harmonically. Schmitt is possibly not as well known as he perhaps should be, and my (limited) experience of his music has been overwhelmingly positive.

Simon Jackson about  SONATINE:
Mar 31, 2022
(Verified customer)
This is an arrangement of the famous Sonatine for solo piano by Ravel of 1903. It a high qualiy transcription by David Walters, oboe professor at the Guildhall School of Music. He has recorded it himself and there are several versions on youtube. Try the Elaine Douvas which is magical before you buy. Very few people can match her performance.
It is beautifully lyrical but high and fast. It is in the original key so there are many top F#s and one top A with an ossia. If you like using the extreme upper register and 3rd octave key it can be wonderfully rewarding with the right reed.
It repays effort but it is like playing a Gillet study, often pianissimo for 11 minutes and needs stamina. Your pianist needs to be as good as possible. The Sonatine is a great performance piece if you have the technique and stamina and your audience will recognise it. If you are an advanced player you won’t be disappointed.

Simon Jackson about  DIVERTISSEMENT Op.39:
Mar 31, 2022
(Verified customer)
Eugene Bozza was a prolific French composer who died in 1991. There are Bozza show pieces for many of the woodwind instruments. He is not regarded as highly as the ‘six’ with whom he was contemporary, which is a pity.
His solo pieces are characterised by rapid passages interspersed with lyricism and usually have free sections for the soloist, as here. Some of Bozza’s compositions are very slick. More like a souffle´ than a serious composition. That resonates with the word ‘divertissement’ anyway.
This is a good recital piece for an advanced player to show different aspects of what a fluent cor player can achieve with a good range and tonal variety. It lies quite comfortably under the fingers and will suit a performer who is prepared to be a bit flamboyant.
