Megan Barr about  26 PIECES by Famous Composers:

This is an excellent set of duets of intermediate standard. The arranger has managed to capture the essence of the works with a good sense of harmony, making them feel surprisingly 'complete'. I have only given 4stars because when I performed a selection of them recently and was writing the programme, I found that some of the attributions were a little vague eg 'from a Beethoven Sonatina'... no opus number or key.

If you are looking for serious oboe music, beautifully written for the instrument the two Arnold Cooke sonata are pieces you should try. Arnold Cooke studied in Germany before the second world war with Hindemith and his music shows influences of that composers style. Both sonata's have strength are full of melodies and free flowing harmony's. Great music for the ' lock down' I really enjoyed working on them!

Absolutely first class service in obtaining music of a somewhat obscure composer from an equally obscure publisher. I felt as though we were speaking by phone as emails raced back and forth across the Pond.

Disappointed that the bassoon part was not in the order..but J Emerson has returned my call quickly saying that it will be sorted out and sent on. This has never happened to me before and I have ordered a lot..so presuming 7a one off.

Super piece, fun to play with a great oboe title and inspiration picture. Lovely to "discover" another fine composer. Ideal to slip into a recital and perfect when infections are around, as unaccompanied.

Jenny Hutchinson about  SCENE:
Jul 18, 2020

Unfortunately there are all too few pieces written specifically for the cor anglais, and this is one of the best. It is tuneful, uses the best register of the instrument, and with practice, lies well under the hands.

However, there is one pitfall of which any prospective purchaser of the piece needs to be aware; there are two editions of what is listed as the same work. The Amadeus edition is by far the "fuller" and more satisfying of the two, whereas the Fountayne edition is simpler, and this, to my mind, makes it less interesting to play.

After a diet of Uhl and Kettel my teacher suggested these studies to me, and I find them a refreshing change. Although they are more conventional they have also helped me to catch and work on some fingering issues that have dogged me over the years. I also think that they will be a good resource for warm-ups in the future.

Ann George about  HOMMAGES:
Jul 20, 2020
(Verified customer)
These unaccompanied pieces are seriously challenging and mainly explore "national" styles. I have been working on "Manuel de Falla" which is exciting and dramatic. This book is a great for the "lockdown" as a piano is unnecessary, although I had already bought "Khatschaturian" as "Armenian Lament and Dance" with piano accompaniment, and several other accompanied Hommages seem to be available separately.

Nigel Braithwaite about  ELEGIE:
Jul 26, 2020

Absolutely gorgeous piece, I can't believe that in 45 years of playing the horn that I had never played it. Poulenc at his peak, shedloads of emotional intensity in the piece itself, the Emerson edition is very clear. One slight typo that's easily corrected is that the stopped section at 17 is only 5 bars long (as indicated in the piano part) and not all the way to the end

These are very melodic and not too taxing in the extreme low and high registers. They are good I would say, for developing evenness of tone and fine grading of dynamics.

Michael Dyer about  DEUXIEME SOLO Cavatine:
Sep 29, 2020
(Verified customer)
Musik Fabrik have produced a poor edition of this neglected work and one obviously not competently proof-read before release. Having complained about one particular error (Bar 47), the replacement copy included numerous rhythmic errors in bars 21-40 and notes-heads of differing sizes in bars 1,2,5 and 6 of the piano part. Bar numbering is also awry in places.
The preface, presumably written by Paul Wehage himself, deals with the Premier Solo not the Deuxieme Solo. It's my impression that Finale has been used in the preparation of this work - a notation programme that in the hands of a competent user, is well able to cope with the demands of this genre. The general impression is rather slapdash. It's a real shame that this is not available in the superior Roncorp edition
