This is a charming piece. It is intermediate in difficulty, and sounds lovely even at a slower tempo than recommended

Sheila Cochrane about  WIBB A Flute for Life:
Jun 17, 2022

How lucky I was to find a copy of this wonderful book - the flute world is mourning 'Wibb's' passing and will continue to for a long time to come. Edward Blakeman let's him 'come back' into our lives through the numerous anecdotes, photos and drawings, stirring up so many fond memories of his teaching, his playing - his 'presence' - I found comfort in reading the book - thank you! (Strangely, the day after noticing the photo of Wibb playing his flute while riding on a penny farthing I saw a man riding on a penny farthing for the first time in real life!)

Ben T about  SAXOPHONE SPECTRUM:
Jul 10, 2022

A classic of the saxophone choir repertoire. We've used this piece a couple of times as a showstopper to open or close a concert, although to play at the proper speed it requires some real dexterity in the upper instruments. Hard to believe it is now 20 years old!

This arrangement is rather disappointing because the 2nd bassoon part in the orchestral original is an octave lower than the first and is iconic; but it is the first bassoon part that has been used for this quintet version.

The CD recording offers rehearsal (piano) and final orchestral versions of the music, and the recorded tempi work well. The music is easy to read and the page turns fall on rests (although there's still very little time to turn them). There are two misprints in the descending sequence at bars 41, 43. Editing is minimal, so there are few additional dynamics, articulation marks or ornamentation, but that leaves performers free to interpret the music for themselves.

It's a lovely concerto but requires rapid articulation and clarity of tone. The rapid finger work would be challenging for less experienced players, but it's an enjoyable work to add to lists of standard repertoire! A good audience pleaser.

This book really aids technical practice, it's thorough and challenging. It repeats the exercises in each key so if you work through the book you'll know you've covered it all. It's purely technical, not melodic, so fairly dry, but that's sometimes what's needed.

Mr John Wesley-Barker about  SUITE from The Victorian Kitchen Garden:
Jul 19, 2022
(Verified customer)
Dedicated to Emma Johnson, the Suite from The Victorian Kitchen Garden by Paul Reade is written for B flat clarinet & piano or harp.
The five pieces are rewarding to play for the clarinettist with a skill level from Grades 5/6+.
Each piece has a programmatic title:
I. Prelude
II. Spring
III. Mists
IV. Exotica
V. Summer
The piano (or harp) accompaniment is not too technically challenging.
These pieces are very popular with audiences and my pupils. The pieces provide an incentive to develop a pleasing tone across the full range of the clarinet.
Recorded by her and harpist Skaila Kanga and in another recording with BBC Concert Orchestra. I suggest you listen to recordings which are available on a number of music streaming providers as well as CDs. Then put in your order with June Emerson, you’ll be playing the pieces in no time. Very rewarding.

How have I been playing quintets for so long and not come across this? An excellent romantic addition to the quintet repertoire. Extremely accessible, and not impossibly difficult. Sometimes a little thickly written so needs attention to bring out the important parts.
Three movements, with plenty of variation.

This is quite challenging. Mathias likes to play with rhythms so this makes the piece difficult in places. However we felt it would be rewarding with some hard work and it was good to find a piece written for our instruments.

Dario Rosenberger about  THE HISTORICAL HORNS HANDBOOK Volume 1:
Aug 30, 2022
(Verified customer)
It is a really good book with many
interesting facts and variable exercises to better understand and practice the natural horn. A. Scott shows sound knowledge about the history and functioning of the instrument.
What I don't understand - and this is the reason for the 3 stars - is the impractical layout of the book.
The inflexible binding makes it impossible to use on a stand. The pages stay open only by force and you have to fix them in a cumbersome way.
For a book that contains mainly excerpts and scores, a ring binding would be much more practical.
For about £70 (with customs and shipping) it is a pity that the Handbook is not really handy.

Decent quality, well printed and legible for the most part, just a few notes are a little out of position. Main complaint is an unnecessary page turn in the score for the 3rd piece.
